New York was first on our list of expansion markets because its theheadquarters for skateboarding on the East Coast and is home to some ofthe most iconic skate spots in the world,?said Joe Maloof. With theBrooklyn Banks now closed for four years and the Unisphere set to closeindefinitely, the timing was perfect for us to bring the Maloof MoneyCup to New York City. The skateboarding community is really phenomenalin how open and inclusive they are of everyone. Weve always wanted tobuild a park that we can leave intact for everyone in the community toenjoy, and thanks to the NYC Parks & Recreation Department andsupport from Vans and other sponsors, we were able to make it happen.
When we heard that the Maloof Money Cup was going to include a contestin New York City and that we were going to be able to donate the parkto the skaters of New York, we leapt at the opportunity to getinvolved, said Steve Van Doren, Vans Vice President of Events &Promotions. Were very fortunate to have a number of great skate parkson the West Coast and were excited to work with the New York skatecommunity to create a world-class skate park."
