Press Release:
Wow what an epic contest! The 2017 SLS Nike SB Super Crown World Championship went down yesterday. The event got underway with the Women’s competition and with the performance that they put on these female competitors showed the world that the future of women’s skateboarding looks bright.
Things got heated nearly immediately during the Run section. It was clear that this was going to be a battle between Leticia Bufoni and Lacey Baker—both former SLS Women’s World Champions. Lacey set things off with some flowing lines that included a stomped nollie heelflip over the euro gap, back 5-0 front 180 down the hubba, and a noseslide 270 out on the bump to ledge. Leticia followed suite with powerful lines punctuated by a long backside 5-0 down the long hubba and nollie 270s over the hip. From the start, you couldn’t help but wonder which of these former champs was going to regain the title.
The Women’s Championship hit a fever pitch in the Best Trick section. A lot was riding on this contest. Judging on how hard they skated, each of these ladies were gunning for the win. Alexis Sablone got the ball rolling with a stylish kickflip front 50-50 down the hubba, earning a whopping 7.9 score for her effort. Then, Mariah Duran broke the 8s by unleashing a hardflip down the big gap for 8.4. Not to be outdone, Lacey Baker threw out her patented noseslide 270 out for an 8.0. This put her within striking distance of Leticia, who had been consistently getting good scores throughout the contest. Bufoni decided to play it safe with her last trick—a fakie ollie down the big gap that only earned a 6.3. Her strategy proved to be unsuccessful as Lacey was able to nail a nose manual nollie heelflip out on the long manual pad for a 8.7 and sealed her repeat as the 2017 SLS Women’s Super Crown World Champion.
The Men’s Championship was an epic finale to a heavy 2017 season on the SLS Nike SB World Tour. From start to finish, this was hands down the best contest that we’ve seen in terms of scores and caliber of tricks. Louie Lopez put the pressure on early by scoring a 9.1 in the very first run of the contest. Nyjah Huston followed suite with a 9.0. And then, in their second runs, Louie, Shane O’Neill, and Nyjah scored a 9.4, 9.2, and 9.2, respectively. To put this into perspective. Chris Joslin shocked everyone last year by being the first to get a 9-Club score in the Run section. In 2017, we saw 9s consistently.
The outstanding skating in the Run section set the pressure on high. Everyone was trying their hardest stuff. By the end of the first two rounds of Best Trick, we only saw a handful of scores posted including: Torey Pudwill’s nollie flip boardslide, Louie Lopez’s halfcab frontside 50-50, and Kelvin Hoefler’s cab back tail on the 9 stair rail. All impressive, but none were 9-Club scores. This would change in the third round when Pudwill upped the ante with a back smith up the five-stair Hubba earning the first 9 of the Best Trick. Nyjah clapped back with an incredible nollie heel noseblunt down the rail for a 9.3. Then, it started raining 9s. Carlos Ribeiro’s switch heel switch back smith on the hubba, Shane’s switch tre double flip down the gap, and Kelvin Hoefler’s halfcab noselide to back tail bigspin out on the down ledge earning 9.1, 9.4, and 9.1, respectively.
But at the end of the day, it was Nyjah Huston’s mind-blowing back 270 kickflip lipslide down the rail that stole the show. The trick earned Huston a 9.5—the highest score of the year, and his fourth 9 of the night. After not winning a Super Crown World Championship since his 2014 season sweep, Nyjah showed us what it means to be a SLS World Champion. He dominated the 2017 SLS Nike SB World Tour and came back to take the 2017 SLS World Champion title after being in the hospital earlier in the week due to a vicious slam in the streets that left him with a concussion and a sprained ankle. Huston defines drive and determination, congrats Nyjah!
